Olympic Athlete Maths

We had a challenge this afternoon. We had to work out how much each Olympic Athlete was ‘worth’. I told the class that each letter in an athlete’s name was worth a value: for example A = £1, B = £2, C = £3.

I gave the children a list of famous Olympic athletes and told them to find out who was most expensive and who was cheapest!

They decided how to work the problem out themselves.
Check out the answers that they blogged in the comments section:

Maths Word Problems

Here is a challenge for you to have a go at. I have put some sums underneath here. Your task is to choose one of the sums and write a word problem that matches the sum. For example, if the sums was ’17 x 6 = 102′, your word problem could be: I have 17 friends and they each gave me £6. That gives me £102 altogether.

Choose a sum and write your problem!

68 + 44 = 112
235 – 154 = 81
14 x 7 = 98
125 / 5 = 5
428 – 136 = 292
12 + 13 + 14 = 39
